Abstract The deposition of DLC films on 321H stainless steel aims at attributing properties such as high wear resistance and low friction coefficient to the substrate material. Nitrogen added to DLC can improve the film adhesion to metal substrates, but the investigation of its effect on corrosion resistance, an important property for stainless steels, is lacking. The DLC film was deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using a pulsed-DC power supply with a gas mixture of Ar and CH4, and to the DLC(N) film deposition was used CH4 and N2 varying the percentage of nitrogen from 10 to 50% in the treatment. DLC films improved both the wear and corrosion resistance of 321H stainless steel. The results show that the 10, 20 and 30% of N2 supply during the deposition increased the adhesion of the film on the substrate, enhancing the wear resistance of the treated material. The addition of 40 and 50% of N2 during the deposition, however, impaired the corrosion resistance compared with the substrate. An improvement of adhesion, wear and corrosion resistance were observed for 30% N2 condition. Thus, the incorporation of suitable concentration of nitrogen modifies the features of the DLC film, obtaining a good combination of high wear resistance and corrosion protection due to a combination of structure, high thickness, and high adhesion of the film to 321H stainless steel.

Resumo Os aromatizantes são essenciais para a indústria na confecção de alimentos industrializados. Porém, pouco se sabe sobre o potencial tóxico desses microingredientes alimentares. Dessa forma, objetivou-se neste trabalho analisar, em células de medula óssea de camundongos, a citotoxicidade, genotoxicidade e mutagenicidade de aromatizantes alimentares sintéticos idênticos ao natural, de maracujá e morango, e artificiais, de baunilha, chocolate, tutti-frutti e biscoito, nas doses 0,5; 1,0; 2,0; 5,0 e 10,0 mL/Kg. Os aditivos foram administrados aos animais via gavagem em aplicação diária única durante sete dias. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos ao procedimento estatístico ANOVA com pós teste de Tukey, com p < 0.05. Os animais tratados com 2,0; 5,0 e 10,0 mL/Kg dos aromatizantes de chocolate, morango e biscoito, e 5,0 e 10,0 mL/Kg dos aromatizantes de baunilha e maracujá vieram a óbito no quinto e sexto dia de experimento, respectivamente. As doses 0,5 e 1,0 mL/Kg dos seis aditivos reduziram significativamente a eritropoiese do tecido analisado. Ainda, os tratamentos 0,5 e 1,0 mL/kg de chocolate, e 1,0 mL/Kg de morango e biscoito induziram a formação de micronúcleos aos eritrócitos de medula em frequência significante. Portanto, nas condições de estudo estabelecidas, os seis microingredientes analisados foram citotóxico e genotóxicos, e os aditivos de morango, chocolate e biscoito também foram mutagênicos em pelo menos uma das doses avaliadas.

Abstract The goal of this study was to analyze cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and mutagenicity to bone marrow cells of mice of nature identical synthetic flavorings, passion fruit and strawberry, and artificial synthetic flavorings, vanilla, chocolate, tutti-frutti and cookie, at doses 0.5; 1.0; 2.0; 5.0 and 10.0 mL/kg. The additives were given to the animals by gavage in a single daily application for seven days. Data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by post Tukey’s post hoc test, p <0.05. Animals treated with 2.0; 5.0 and 10.0 mL/Kg of flavorings chocolate, strawberry and cookie, and 5.0 and 10.0 mL/Kg of flavorings vanilla and passion fruit died on the fifth and sixth day of the experiment, respectively. The doses 0.5 and 1.0 mL/Kg of the six additives significantly reduced erythropoiesis in the examined tissue. Also, treatments 0.5 and 1.0 mL/Kg of chocolate, and 1.0 mL/Kg of strawberry and biscuit induced the formation of micronuclei in the bone marrow erythrocytes, at a significant frequency. Therefore, under the study conditions, the six microingredients analyzed were cytotoxic and genotoxic, and additives strawberry, chocolate and cookie were also mutagenic in at least one of the evaluated doses.

Neste trabalho foram estudadas modificações da superfície de alumina com óxidos de metais alcalino-terrosos, usando o método dos precursores poliméricos. Os compostos modificados foram caracterizados por difração de raios X, adsorção-dessorção de nitrogênio e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. As propriedades catalíticas desses novos catalisadores foram avaliadas para a reação de transesterificação de óleo de babaçu. Foi observado que a reação de transesterificação de óleo de babaçu com metanol ocorreu com sucesso na presença das aluminas modificadas.

In this study, modifications of alumina surface with of alkaline earth metal oxides were studied, using the polymeric precursor method. The modified compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and scanning electron microscopy. The catalytical properties of these new catalysts were evaluated for the transesterification reaction of babassu oil. It is observed that the transesterification reaction of babassu oil with methanol was successfully carried out using the modified alumina samples.

O território brasileiro apresenta baixa atividade sísmica, característica de região tectônica intra-placas. Entretanto, os efeitos dos sismos não podem ser simplesmente desconsiderados em projetos de engenharia. Assim, é apresentado neste trabalho um estudo da sismicidade da região Nordeste do Brasil, que por estar posicionada próxima à falha do Atlântico Central, a leva a apresentar uma taxa de atividade sísmica com con- tinuidade de ocorrência mais alta do que a de outras regiões brasileiras. Dentro deste contexto, são calculadas as recorrências sísmicas e as distribuições probabilísticas de acelerações espectrais para a região. De posse desses valores, são determinados os espectros de resposta de projeto para a região, fazendo as devidas comparações entre os resultados obtidos para cada período de recorrência com o espectro apresen- tado pela Norma Brasileira de Sismos NBR 15421.

The Brazilian territory presents low seismicity, typical of a tectonic intra-plates region. Nevertheless, the seismic effects cannot be simply disre- garded in the engineering projects. Therefore, a study is presented in this paper, of the seismicity of the Brazilian Northeastern Region, which due to its proximity with the South Atlantic Ridge, presents a seismic activity rate higher than of other Brazilian regions. In this way, the seismic recur- rences and the probabilistic distribution functions of spectral accelerations are determined for the region. From the obtained values, the design response spectra are defined for the region, being its values compared, for several periods, with the design spectrum presented by the Brazilian Seismic Standard NBR 15421.

O Estado de Maranhão no Brasil apresenta um potencial grande para o cultivo de várias espécies oleaginosas, como babaçu, feijão-soja, planta de óleo de rícino, etc... Estes óleos vegetais podem ser transformados em biodiesel pela reação de transesterificação em meio alcalino, usando metanol ou etanol. A produção de biodiesel a partir da mistura destes álcoois é uma forma de acrescentar as vantagens técnicas e econômicas do metanol às vantagens ambientais do etanol. A mistura de álcool otimizada foi observada usando a relação de volume metanol/etanol de 80 % MeOH: 20 % EtOH. O teor de ésteres foi de 98.70 %, um valor acima do exigido pela ANP, 96.5 % (m/m), e um rendimento de biodiesel em massa foi de 95.32 %. Este biodiesel cumpre as especificações de umidade, massa específica, viscosidade cinemática e percentagens de álcoois livres (metanol mais etanol) e glicerina livre.

Maranhão state in Brazil presents a big potential for the cultivation of several oleaginous species, such as babassu, soybean, castor oil plant, etc... These vegetable oils can be transformed into biodiesel by the transesterification reaction in an alkaline medium, using methanol or ethanol. The biodiesel production from a blend of these alcohols is a way of adding the technical and economical advantages of methanol to the environmental advantages of ethanol. The optimized alcohol blend was observed to be a methanol/ethanol volume ratio of 80 % MeOH: 20 % EtOH. The ester content was of 98.70 %, a value higher than the target of the ANP, 96.5 % (m/m), and the biodiesel mass yield was of 95.32 %. This biodiesel fulfills the specifications of moisture, specific gravity, kinematic viscosity and percentages of free alcohols (methanol plus ethanol) and free glycerin.
